Flying Pen Press is currently seeking help for various contract positions.
Flying Pen Press is a small publishing company based in Denver, Colorado. The company
publishes fiction and nonfiction in a wide variety of genres and topics, primarily in trade paperback and ebook
formats (currently, Flying Pen Press does not publish any of the following: poetry, erotica, children's, young
adult, Christian, New Age, art books, or textbooks).
Flying Pen Press has about to grow rapidly and expand its acquisition and production
capabilities. We are ready to bring on several new publishing professionals. This is an opportunity to start working
with a fairly young company that has established itself as a publisher of great books, in a position of higher
responsibility than most entry-level jobs. Those hired during this phase of the company's growth will have the
ability to help shape and manage the company's mission for years to come.
Flying Pen Press is a virtual company, without a central office. All work is done in
home offices via telecommuting. Weekly and quarterly meetings in the Denver area are mandatory, generally scheduled
for Monday mornings. Web-conference options are available for attending these meetings.
Because of the nature of the company, all positions within the company, even the
publisher's position, are contractor positions. No offer of employment is made or implied. Under the rules of the
Internal Revenue Service, contractors are allowed to have other clients, and we are not allowed to dictate how or
when the work is to be performed; we may only dictate results. Therefore, Flying Pen Press contractors manage their
own time and are not required to "clock in." Within these constraints, Flying Pen Press works as a team of
contractors working on various book projects. Team coordination is crucial to our success.
We seek contractors to perform the work of full-time positions. We are able to work
with contractors who can only perform the work at part-time levels, often creating shared-work contracts or
adjusting compensation accordingly.
We currently seek contractors to perform the work of the following positions:
Writer
Flying Pen Press normally licenses
publication rights from freelance authors. However, often the company wishes to produce its own copyrighted material
or consign authors to write books according to a specified set of directions or outline.
Project-based or full-time contracts are
available. Ghostwriters are also sought. Royalties may be available in addition to standard compensation
schedule.
(Writers wishing to submit their manuscript
for potential publication should send a query or proposal to the submissions department:
Submissions@FlyingPenPress.com.)
Journalist
Flying Pen Press is currently forming a
"news book" imprint, for publication of book-length reporting on current news events in a timely manner. Contractor
journalists must be able to accept assignments to cover breaking news and prepare chapter-length or book-length
reports within two weeks, on rigid deadlines.
Project-based or full-time contracts are
available, but contractors must be available to accept immediate assignments as news breaks. Royalties may be
available in addition to standard compensation schedule. Travel & expense reimbursements are included when on
assignment.

the News Book imprint. The News Editor will assign stories to contract journalists, prepare reports for publication
as printed and electronic books, and manage journalists. The News Editor will find and contract on-site journalists
to cover news stories at remote locations. Development of news bureaus in various cities and a newsroom in the
Denver area is expected in the long term.

production with other publishers.

additional profit sharing for full-time contractors. Full-time or part-time contracts are available.

Requirements for All Positions
Flying Pen Press is in a stage of growth, following an initial stage of establishing
the company as a viable business model. This requires all individuals working for the company have an
entrepreneurial spirit, as we will be working together to build a successful company from the ground up. We are
looking for individuals that are passionate about publishing, and who will personally embrace the brand.
We are looking for raw talent and an unbreakable spirit to succeed. Experience is not
necessary for any position, as we will train, although prior experience and education can be helpful in finding the
right people.
It is our policy to conduct trial by fire when bringing on new talent. As such, we
seek self-starters and self-trainers. We are happy to take the time to train people how to do even in the highest of
executive work, but we need to see the desire to learn and an ability to improvise on deadline.
Flying Pen Press is in the Ideas business. We are constantly seeking new ways to
compete in the publishing industry and new types of books to produce. Thus, we expect all contractors to offer
innovative ideas and participate in the occasional brainstorming sessions.
Flying Pen Press is a virtual company. All contractors must telecommute via the
Internet. We generally use Twitter as our primary communication channel for day-to-day operations. We encourage
applicants to have a usable home office with a high-speed internet connection and a smart phone.
Flying Pen Press seeks talent from wherever we may find it, regardless of race,
religion, sexuality, gender, politics, heritage or nationality. Because of the nature of our business model, we
encourage those who prefer to work from home, who may need a flexible schedule or who do not fit in the pre-
conceived concepts of "employee" to apply.
Compensation
Flying Pen Press compensates contractors on a performance-based profit-sharing
schedule.
The more that a contractor produces against the published standard of full-time
performance, the more shares the contractor is entitled to.
The more profit the company realizes, the more each share is worth.
Profit shares are reported and disbursed January 31 and July 31 of each year. Monthly
advances may be available, depending on availability of funds and the availability of accurate profit projections
and performance evaluations.
Flying Pen Press reinvests 50% of its operating profits back into the company, to
generate growth. The remainder is distributed to profit-sharing contractors.
The profit-sharing contractors are consulted when planning budgets, so that operating
costs that can reduce profits can be openly discussed. Flying Pen Press maintains transparent operations and open
bookkeeping that may be viewed by any profit-sharing or royalty-earning contractor.
Please note that Flying Pen Press currently earns very little profit. The company has
been developing a viable, scalable business model since 2007, and is now ready for the next phase, a phase for
growth and earnings. As talented individuals and agencies are contracted to provide skill, labor and insight,
earnings are expected to grow rapidly. The projections for Flying Pen Press's growth and profitability will be
shared with applicants.
While we hope to offer contractors benefits in the future, we currently do not have
the funds available for additional benefits. We provide contractors a 55% discount on any quantity of any of our
books, which may be resold or commercially distributed, in addition to the free proof-of-publication copies, review
copies and working copies we may provide.
Applicants should submit a printed resume, references, and any portfolio they wish to
present.
