Trials of the Warmland
Trials of the Warmland is the second installment in the post-apocalyptic fiction series – The Feral World – by Gaddy Bergmann. The Feral World series is set in the fifty-first century in the region formerly known as the United States of America, approximately 3010 years after the asteroid strike. In the first book, Migration of the Kamishi (ISBN: 9780979588914) the author introduces the reader to an action-packed adventure when an asteroid entered earth’s field. Despite the advanced technology of 2036, which enabled the people to break the asteroid into smaller pieces, the effect was still devastating. True, they saved humanity from extinction however there was nothing left but survival.
It was at this pivotal point when the survivors made a conscious choice to live simply with a light footprint on the planet and with a conscious choice to avoid technology. Thousands of years later humanity is reduced to numerous tribes that tend to stick to their own territories, however there are a few migrating tribes that have no qualms about taking what is theirs. One small, but content village becomes their target and the only survivors from the violent attack are two young men, Blake and Manosh, and two dogs.
Trials of the Warmland continues the series with Blake, Manosh, the two dogs, and Lana - a woman they rescued along the way. In this novel we see Blake mature and grow into the hero we expect him to be, while the romance develops between Lana and Blake. After an intense journey, the remaining travelers – Blake, Lana and one female dog – arrive at the Warmlands where they are readily not welcomed and they discover that some of the asteroid survivors had escaped to the moon colony and were now visiting Earth again. The tribes endure their presence, but there is an underlying ominous feeling about this issue. Because there is a lot of travel involved in the book, readers will find the map and glossary helpful in keeping track of where the characters are and more details about each tribe they encounter along the way.
The author has a calm and peaceful way of reaching the reader and his background in environment, population and organism biology is certainly evident in his detailed descriptions of the flora and fauna. In fact the author states that his admiration for nature was the inspiration behind The Feral World series. The author’s bio tells readers that Gaddy has a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Population and Organismic Biology, as well as a master’s degree in zoology. In his professional career he has been an educator and has done research with ecology, microbiology and fish projects throughout Colorado, US.
Trials of the Warmland quickly followed the release of the first book in this series, Migration of the Kamishi, and I am told by the publisher – Flying Pen Press – that the third installment of this series, Riders of the Mapinguari, will be released in the summer of 2009. Readers will find a sneak peak into the upcoming novel at the end of this book.
